The Pennsylvania 500 started in 1974 as the Purolator 500 and fans were treated to a victory by The King, Richard Petty. Petty won the race again in ’76 and then gave way to legends like Bill Elliot and Dale Earnhardt in the 1980s. Starting in 2007, the race was moved from its traditional July date into August, swapping dates with the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard.

In 2008, Sunoco, the official NASCAR fuel supplier, based in Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia region of the American Red Cross, agreed to sponsorship of the race and charity events to benefit the American Red Cross South Pennsylvania-Philadelphia region.

Most commonly known simply as the Pennsylvania 500, the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 is the second of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car races hosted at the famous Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania

The 2.5 mile tri-oval track at Long Pond is one of the most unique racing facilities found on the Sprint Cup Series circuit, and with the longest straightaway of all the NASCAR tracks, the Pocono Raceway always promises to provide plenty of overtaking and lead changes.

NASCAR Pennsylvania 500 Results and Winners

2011 Good Sam RV Insurance 500 Race Winner

Brad Keselowski, driving with a broken left ankle, won 2011 Good Sam 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway. On the top 20, Keselowski is in position to claim the first wild-card spot, being the only driver in positions 11-20 with more than one victory. He leaves Pocono 18th in the standings, having gained three positions.

2010 Pennsylvania 500 Race Winner

Greg Biffle has won the 2010 Pennsylvania 500. Roush Fenway driver Greg Biffle and his team knew well enough to take two tires late in the Sprint Cup race at Pocono. And the strategy propelled him to a comfortable victory over Tony Stewart. Carl Edwards finished third, followed by points leader Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin.

2009 Pennsylvania 500 Winner: Denny Hamlin

Hamlin had a great car all day long. They stayed up front and paced the field. They fell behind on an adjustment but battled back. On the final restart Hamlin muscle his car to the front and taking the lead away from Clint Bowyer, and never looking back.
