2011 Indianapolis 500 Winner
Dan Wheldon won the 100th anniversary edition of IndyCar’s Indianapolis 500 for the second time. Wheldon, a Briton in his first drive of the year who also won the race in 2005, collected the Borg-Warner trophy after completing 200 laps in two hours, 56 minutes, 11 seconds yesterday. Hildebrand’s battered Panther Racing car skidded across the line in second place, 2.1 seconds later.
2010 Indianapolis 500 Winner
After having the dominant car and the perfect game plan, Dario Franchitti still needed more Sunday -- one break to win his second Indianapolis 500.
The victory made Franchitti's boss, Chip Ganassi, the first owner to win Indy and NASCAR's Daytona 500 in the same year. It validated the Scottish driver's return to the IndyCar circuit two years after celebrating his 2007 Indy victory by making an unsuccessful move with Ganassi to NASCAR.
Franchitti drove 199 nearly flawless laps, then survived the last one with a huge break from a spectacular crash to climb back on top of the open-wheel world Sunday with his second win at the Indianapolis 500.

2009 Indianapolis 500 Winner
Hélio Castroneves from Brazil competed in the Indianapolis 500 race on Sunday, May 24, 2009 and won the first place trophy, his third Indianapolis 500 victory.
The tears flowed as soon as Helio Castroneves turned his red-and-white car into Victory Lane, and he really got emotional when Roger Penske leaned over to give his driver a hug.
Castroneves became the ninth driver to win the historic race three times, and his timing couldn't have been better. He won the pole. Then he won the pit-stop competition. And now, the biggest win of all, No. 3 for the guy who drives car No. 3, leaving him only one win away from joining the most elite group of all: four-time Indy winners A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears.
For Penske, it was Indy win No. 15 -- more than any other car owner and ensuring that the Captain has never gone more than three years between wins at this place, except for the time he didn't run because of a split in open-wheel racing.
Castroneves pulled away over the final laps to beat Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick, who eclipsed her historic fourth-place finish as a rookie in 2005 by crossing the strip of bricks in third. Castroneves started from the pole and led the first seven laps, then laid back for a good part of the overcast, sweltering afternoon. Finally, on a restart after the sixth of eight yellow flags, Castroneves surged past Dixon to reclaim the lead with 59 laps to go.

The 92nd
running of 2008 Indianapolis 500 Winner - Scott Dixon
wins Indy 500
Sunday was an Indianapolis 500 the way we all
remember it. Well, those of us old enough to
remember when so many things made this event
special.
A giant crowd, clearly the biggest in a
decade. Tempers flaring, almost A.J. Foyt
style, among several contending drivers,
including Danica. Unexpected moments and wild
crashes, but thankfully, no one hurt. Tears of
disappointment from one driver. And the race
favorite holding off the little-team underdog
in the final laps.
New Zealand's
Scott Dixon will go in the books as the first
Indy 500 winner of the new era, the return of
one unified series for American open-wheel
racing. |
