Nascar Nextel Cup Series: Crown Royal 400 Richmond
International Raceway
Richmond, VA Saturday - May 03, 2008
In 2008, Crown Royal's third year as the
title sponsor of the race, the company decided
to run an essay contest during Daytona Speedweeks with the
winner having the Crown Royal 400 in May named after them.
The winner of this essay contest was Jim Stewart from Houma,
Louisiana, hence the name Crown Royal Presents The Jim
Stewart 400. The promotion was so popular that Crown Royal
decided to run it again in 2008, this time with Dan Lowry of
Columbiana, Ohio winning.
The race is currently held as a Saturday night event in
early May. For several years, it was
held as a daytime event the weekend after the Daytona 500 in
February. Lights were installed at the facility in 1991, but
the spring race remained during the day. Consistent cold
weather and even a snow delay in 1989, prompted track
officials to move the race later in the spring. The race was
moved around to May or June, and permanently moved from
Sunday afternoons to Saturday nights. After a few years, the
race eventually fixed as a May race date by 1999.

Nascar Busch Series: Funai 250 Richmond
International Raceway
Richmond, VA Friday - May 02, 2008
The Funai 250 Nascar Busch Series
race is conducted at the Richmond International
Raceway.
The Richmond International Raceway, has undergone
several makeovers since its original
construction in the 1946 and
is presently one of the most advanced centers for
racing in the US. The track opened
as a half-mile dirt oval; the popular NASCAR venue
has come a long way since then, and has maintained
its twice per year spot on the Nextel Cup schedule
by providing a spectacular place for NASCAR fans
to watch great Nextel Cup racing.
The Richmond region is historic and boasts of
several museums of art, art history and civil war
era battlefields. Whatever your interests are,
there is something for you to discover in the
Historic Richmond Region.
Richmond International Raceway has become a
favorite of many of NASCAR's top drivers, both
young and old. The decision to have Richmond
International Raceway as the final race before the
"Chase for the NEXTEL Cup" adds even more to the
existing ambience.
