It was once
predicted that cars could reach speeds of 235 MPH's but with
the current
restrictor plate set-up that speed has been held down.
There are new restrictions at both Talladega and Daytona,
NASCAR drivers started to go to fast at Talladega, so they
had to do something to slow them down. That’s why we have
restrictor plates now at both Talladega and Daytona. The
plate is made of aluminum and has four holes drilled into
it.
They are placed in between the carburetor and intake
manifold to reduce the rate at which fuel and air go into
the engines combustion chamber, which reduces horsepower and
slows the car down. The cars still go fast but it takes them
a few laps to get up over 190 mph. If the plate wasn’t on
one of today’s cars, speeds would reach well over 225 mph.
Odds to Win Aaron's 499
2011 Aaron's 499 Winner
At the end of 188 laps and 500 miles, Jimmie Johnson won Sunday's 2011 Aaron's 499 by inches, tying a record with his razor-thin .002-second margin of victory. With a push from Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson edged Clint Bowyer in a wild four-wide finish at the 2.66-mile track. The victory was Johnson's first of the season, his second at Talladega and the 54th of his Cup career.
2010 Aaron's 499 Winner
Kevin Harvick wins by Inches at Talladega’s NASCAR Sprint Cup 2010 Aaron’s 499. A few hundred feet from the end of the hardest-fought race in NASCAR history, Kevin Harvick ducked past Jamie McMurray to win the 2010 Aaron's 499 at Talladega Speedway by three feet.
Jamie McMurray was trying to win his third restrictor-plate race in a row, something only the legendary Dale Earnhardt ever managed to do. McMurray guessed wrong as to which way Harvick would go and that was the race.
